Part Time Library Assistant-User Services
12-15 hours per week
$12-13 per hour
Position Summary
The Library Assistant greets, directs, and provides information to library customers and performs a variety of clerical tasks related to the processing, sorting and circulation of library materials. The position requires a great deal of contact with the public. Candidates must have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and have excellent customer service and computer skills. This is a permanent part time position.
Schedule to be determined. This schedule is subject to change as the library's needs change due to the current Covid-19 pandemic and planned move to a new facility in 2021. One evening and participation in the weekend rotation will be required in the future.

Ability to push/pull objects weighing up to 60-80 lbs on wheels
Qualifications: High School Diploma or G.E.D., Associates or Bachelor’s degree preferred. Computer skills and a strong commitment to internal and external customer service required. Must be highly motivated, a quick learner and able to adapt to changing user needs. Ability to work 1 evening a week and every other Saturday. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to cheerfully respond to patron requests, become familiar with library resources and services, work cooperatively in a team environment, be able to prioritize work and complete assignments in a timely manner.
Other Qualifications:
The position requires a Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Record Check and FBI Fingerprint Clearance.
The Middletown Free Library belongs to the Delaware County Library System and is conveniently located between Philadelphia and Wilmington, DE. The library has 3 full-time and 8 part-time professional and support staff positions and serves a population of approximately 16,000.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Maintains excellent customer service (internal & external) at all times.
- Answers informational and directional questions of library customers in person and by phone. Routes customers to other staff as needed.
- Assists library customers with use of the computers and online catalog.
- Answers telephone and directs calls.
- Checks out, checks in, and renews library materials, notifies library users about fines and fees.
- Collects library fines and fees.
- Registers new library users. Renews and modifies records of current users.
- Assures the confidentiality of library use and library customer records.
- Resolves Circulation Desk problems, such as library customer concerns with lost or overdue items, fines, or registrations. Refers complex problems to the appropriate staff member.
- Performs Circulation Desk and library opening and closing procedures.
- Sorts and prepares items for shelving or filing, including interlibrary deliveries and emptying book drops.
- Assists with library programs and displays; registration, signs, crafts, book lists, etc.
- Assists in Technical Services with preparing new materials for circulation.
- Shelves items and maintains order of materials on the shelves.
- Searches for holds requests, in-transit, missing, lost, overdue, or other items and follows up with library customers or staff as appropriate.
- May work evenings and participates in the weekend rotation.
- Performs any duties designated by Circulation Manager and professional librarians in assigned work area
- Participate in scheduled educational and developmental activities, such as staff in-service days, staff meetings, job-related seminars, webinars, workshops and technology training as well as job-related committees.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Positive and enthusiastic approach to public service. Strong customer service orientation.
- Demonstrate courtesy and empathy.
- Ability to relate well and effectively communicate with library users of all ages, including adults, teens and children.
- Must be able to work as part of a team.
- General knowledge of office practices and procedures.
- Flexibility and ability to adapt in a complex and changing environment.
- Demonstrated computer literacy, including basic proficiency in Microsoft Office, Windows, and Internet. Familiarity with the Sierra ILS or other ILS system preferred but not required.
- Ability to alphabetize correctly and to understand numerical arrangements utilizing the Dewey Decimal System.
